Vlad Jecan

Graduate Program, Teaching Assistant

Vlad B. Jecan holds a Ph.D. in Political Science. He is currently completing his second doctorate in Comparative Literature in consultation with Prof. Mihai I. Spariosu. His research tries to answer a rather simple question: “why do we fear robots?” The quite pessimistic common view is that virtual reality will overtake reality and intelligent machines will replace humanity altogether. Dr. Jecan hypothesizes that such expectations are caused by the anxiety of agon ingrained into Western thought that seeks relationships of replacement rather than zero-sum games. “Always be best, preeminent beyond all others” old Peleus advised his son, Achilles. But cyberspace, where A.I. operates, can serve as a laboratory to simulate irenic values in new worlds outside the parameters of the familiar.
