Comparative Literature involves the study of literature across national and linguistic boundaries from interdisciplinary and multi- cultural perspectives. Foreign language study is central to the discipline since a thorough examination of literary works must be based on a knowledge of the works in their original languages. Through approaches that draw on language facility, linguistic analysis, literary theory, and cultural criticism, students learn to read texts for the way they make meaning, for the assumptions that underlie that meaning, and for the aesthetic elements evinced in that meaning.
The mission of the Comparative Literature Department is to provide instruction and to conduct research in world literature, literary criticism and theory, and African and Asian languages.
