Requirements for the A.B. Degree in Chinese Language and Literature

Requirements for a major leading to the A.B. degree in Chinese Language and Literature can be met in the following configuration of courses:
1. CHNS 3010 and CHNS 3020
2. Choose four Chinese language/literature courses from the following (12 hours):
CHNS 4110, CHNS 4120, CHNS 4190, CHNS 4500/6500, CHNS 4600/6600
3. Choose four Asian Literature/Cinema courses from the following (12 hours):
CMLT 3220 CMLT 4220/6220 CMLT 4600/6600 CMLT 4610/6610 CMLT 4620/6620 JPNS 4500/6500
4. Choose three Asian Culture courses from the following (9 hours):
ARHI 3040, ARHI 4620/6620, ARHI 4930/6930 (Allowed for the major requirement if the course is about Asian art), CMLT(ANTH) 3180, GEOG 4730, GEOG 4740/6740, HIST 3601, HIST 3602, HIST 3661, HIST 3662, HIST 3663, HIST 3670H, HIST 3680H, HIST 4600/6600, POLS 4360, RELI 3300, RELI 4401/6601, RELI 4402/6602, RELI 4403/6603, RELI 4404/6604, RELI 4910/6910. At least 15 hours of the required 27 hours must be earned at UGA. In consultation with the Undergraduate Coordinator, students will plan a program of study that centers on Japanese language, East Asian literature, and Asian culture in general. CHNS 1001. Elementary Chinese I. 4 hours.
Fundamentals of grammar, pronunciation, composition, and conversation.
Offered fall semester every year.

CHNS 1002. Elementary Chinese II. 4 hours.
Prerequisite: CHNS 1001.
A continuation of Elementary Chinese I.
Offered spring semester every year.

CHNS 2001. Intermediate Chinese I. 3 hours.
Prerequisite: CHNS 1002.
Intermediate grammar, reading, conversation, and composition.
Offered fall semester every year.

CHNS 2002. Intermediate Chinese II. 3 hours.
Prerequisite: CHNS 2001 or permission of department.
A continuation of Intermediate Chinese I.
Offered spring semester every year.

CHNS 3010. Advanced Chinese I. 3 hours.
Prerequisite: CHNS 2002 or permission of department.
Advanced grammar, reading, conversation, and composition.
Offered fall semester every year.

CHNS 3020. Advanced Chinese II. 3 hours.
Prerequisite: CHNS 3010 or permission of department.
A continuation of Advanced Chinese I.
Offered spring semester every year.

CHNS 3990. Directed Study in Chinese Language and/or Literature. 3-9 hours. Repeatable for maximum 9 hours credit.
Prerequisite: Permission of department.
Independent study and research under the direction of individual faculty members.
Non-traditional format: Directed study.
Not offered on a regular basis.

CHNS 4110/6110. Advanced Chinese III. 3 hours.
Undergraduate prerequisite: CHNS 3020.
An introduction to classical Chinese focusing on translation, analysis of grammar, and the semantic range and use of commonly occurring classical Chinese words. Readings include selections of the early classics through later imperial literature.

CHNS 4120. Readings in Classical Chinese. 3 hours. Repeatable for maximum 6 hours credit.
Prerequisite: CHNS 4110.
A continuation of Advanced Chinese III focusing on translation, analysis of grammar, and the semantic range and use of commonly occurring classical Chinese words. Readings include selections of the early classics through later imperial works.

CHNS 4190. Etymological and Literary History of Chinese Writing. 3 hours.
Prerequisite: Permission of department.
A review of history of HanZi, Chinese characters, and how they were adopted into Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese literature and culture. All materials will be read and discussed in the original language.

CHNS 4500/6500. Readings in Chinese Literature. 3 hours. Repeatable for maximum 9 hours credit.
Prerequisite: Permission of department.
Undergraduate prerequisite or corequisite: CHNS 4110 and CHNS 4120.
Graduate prerequisite or corequisite: CHNS 4110 and CHNS 4120 and 9 hours of CHNS 3990.
Selected readings of Chinese literature and literary criticism in the original language. Texts of various genres and from different periods of the Chinese literary tradition will be read and discussed in Chinese.

CHNS 4600/6600. Chinese Literature: Prose. 3 hours. Repeatable for maximum 9 hours credit.
Prerequisite: CHNS 4120 or permission of department.
A survey of traditional and modern Chinese short prose focusing on literary texts in the original language. The course traces the development of short fiction and the essay in China.
